what does "represenation" mean?

how does a sport grow without critical thinking about how to do the sport, how to train the athletes within and how to coach coaches on fitness?

what individual sport out there has rules and regulations on what you wear, who your trainer is and what training methodology you choose?

what sport out there does not allow those in the sport to ask questions, make observations and request some thoughts into the evolution of the sport?

some thoughts to ponder on.....what are your thoughts?

- we have been asked to wear Reebok gear for the Games:
"Athletes must wear their (Reebok) uniforms as they take the field for their heat. You may, however, remove your shirt for or during the workout, but you can't wear a different shirt during the workout. You can wear whatever accessories you like as long as they are not visibly branded with logos or marks of Reebok's competitors. You can wear any footwear without restriction"

from here:
- for my own reasons of maintenance of integrity, not getting lost in the mix of drama vs. sport and "sticking" to my gut instinct, i will not be participating this year
- i personally will forge forward in the teaching and design of how to be fit, and continually be open to options of how to test, train and evolve fitness on this blog for our family and those who wish to be invloved in this
- we'll monitor, test, learn, etc...all in the search for answers without interruption

ONWARD!

This is all extremely depressing. Even worse is all of the claims that they have put forth in the past.

From my L1 training package - 'Crossfit is an open-source engine where inputs from any quarter can be publicly given to demonstrate fitness and fitness programming, and where coaches, trainers, and athletes can collectively advance the art and science of optimizing human performance.'

Apparently, it has been empirically proven that working out in Reebok shirts is the only path towards improving work capacity across broad time and modal domains. We're all effed.

Coach - sorry for the bad taste in your mouth from their bullshit. Look forward to joining your journey of OPENNESS and LEARNING.

I could've seen this coming. Competing in the Regionals this year, it was amazing to see Reebok's interest in building a product and becoming intertwined with Crossfit. In my mind, Crossfit is doing an amazing job of finding ways to test for the fittest on earth, and Reebok did amazing things to support that task.

James is also doing an amazing job. For me, and many of us here, james is the first person that made me think of Crossfit as a "sport". His passion for fitness and cometition and thoughtfulness about how to go about it drew me to the "Big Dawg" world in 2009.

From my view, James programming diverged from Crossfit's (probably back in 2009), but it became more pronounced in recent months. To see "Big Dawgs" and "Unbroken" shirts in competitons, you knew there was a "cult inside a cult". I'm not sure Crossfit is ready for that. They did not display a readiness for conflicting ideas with Wolf and Everett (who I believe James works closely with through the Black Box Summitt). Certainly not now, when major $$$ depend on branding and packaging of the sport.

I don't believe James has spoken out, or done anything, that doesn't represent the ideals of Crossfit to the fullest. But at the same time, unless you are 100% lock step with the current programming/sponsorships/competition, you may be in danger of getting hit by a train.

-reminiscent of (though less dramatic than) robb's getting the boot from cf

-i think one thing that attracted many of us to crossfit in the first place was the commitment to constantly learning and tracking data to see what produces the best results. i look forward to continuing on this journey with a like-minded group. thanks, james, for providing a vehicle for this pursuit.

-maybe we'll see some "UNBROKEN" logos on people's backs a la Nathan H. at last year's regional?

The results speak for themselves. James is creating some obvious firebreathers and it has definitely caught the attention of the people in charge. Keep fighting the good fight. We're in the trenches with you :)

Also, I've caught some MAJOR heat from a few of my athletes claiming that "This programming might work for the fittest people in the world but not for me." It's good to know that I'm not the only one suffering for something better!

surprised...no. the only thing that sucks is i have to keep doing crossfit at some compacity to compete well. as we all gather in the arena and do henious workouts that castro throws together and hope not to get injured while selling out in front of a crowd. the 100's wod for example. i train for self. to sharpen my drive, my skills, toughen the soul for tasks unseen. i compete to "test" my mind, to raise the stakes and elicit some greater anxiety, make the response more potent, hopefully preparing for a car accident that never happens. also because i love to compete. for the same reason above. but i don't train the way i compete b/c i will always be fucked up, injured, bad back...the likes. i can't claim health/fitness and walk around like an 80 year old. but castro wouldn't know anything about that, i don't see him doing much competing.
this is why i am here. have been here. and will stay here. and i am sure many of you are the same. baird and mullen turned me on to OPT, had it not happened i would have stopped cf'ing long ago. it was maybe killing me.
    thx james. class act.

Bang on, Michael, part of CF's appeal for so many was how it diverged from the norm and created it's own path. Now it's so scared of the mavericks and free-thinkers that it's try to black list anyone who isn't towing the company line AND it's creating uniforms so all competitors look the same; unable display the box/gym they compete for??? Good god that is so shameless it boggles the mind. How much of the CF Games was seeing all the different affiliate t-shirts and being able to identify people based on that??

CFHQ prays at the alter of corporate evil now, no better than an edgy Globo-Gym mentality trying to put off a super-cool vibe so they don't look like the total sellouts they are. What a crock. Although I'm fully behind James' decision, I still think you could have gone and taped 'SUCKS' behind the word 'Reebok.'

HQ just keep going to these lengths to distance and disparage the people that helped make them who they are now. It's enough to turn your stomach. What a pathetic bunch of gutless losers, this shit is going to bite them in the ass one of these days.

Well dawgs, I don't post much but this one I gotta chime in on. I guess I just have to sit back and laugh.

It is turning into the training montages of Rocky IV. HQ or traditional .com'ers(Ivan Drago) with the big money and support of Reebok. Fancy facilities, pretty clothes, gelled hair. Then there is us, THE DAWGS (ROCKY), still training old school, in our sheds, in garages, old boxes, everyone is against us. With pens, paper, evidence based data. Hysterical.

I've found the RIGHT way to train, in a sport that I love, that will allow me to do it for a long time. Thank you for what you do coach. You have our respect and support.

I'll be the first to say it since no one else has yet. GET YOUR ASS OUT TO THE HDC COACH! We all want to see you under the lights.

WOW this saddens yet doesn't surprise me. HQ has sold out to Reebok and is obviously threatened by people like James and Robb Wolf who are critical thinkers, intelligent and areconstantly growing and always looking for ways to improve human performance for all athletes whether a beginner or elite. CF has now become just another money making circus with people in charge that really know nothing about "forging elite fitness" other than how to market it and make money off it. Anyone who knows James knows that he would never disparage anything. He goes quietly about his business of developing elite fitness programming and his results speak for themselves.

THis whole journey should be about creating the best life for yourself and that should include achieving the best fitness the best nutrition and the best mental preparedness - James programming does all of this and more. His programming is explicitly thought out and based on data, results and experience. I know that you (James) will just continue on doing what you do and we will be the reap the extreme benefits of your knowledge, generosity, and expertise. You are my coach, I am a Big Dawg Forever!

I hope those that are going to the games do ink their skin and be proud of who and what you represent and screw HQ!

What HQ is doing saddens me too. I started CrossFitting last March and loved it. By the time the Open came around I was tired, beat down and sick of CrossFit. It is just a money making machine now throwing up ridiculous metcons on the mainsite that will kill people. I am so thankful for James' programming and approach to training. I don't see myself using any other training methodology.

In all honesty, if I ever need to find trusted sources for S&C, health, sport, or longevity, all I have to do is talk to everyone who's been booted by HQ! Mark Twight, Dan John, Catalyst, Robb Wolf, and now OPT, if they're good enough to get the boot, they're good enough for me!

OPT is the best coach that I have ever trained under, period.

After two weeks off I am ready to jump back into some training. I was really disappointed that I missed the cut by one place at regionals, and even more disappointed that I didn't prove that the Big Dawgs know how to train right. I can't wait to get back to training and continue this upward growth of fitness as a learned so much the past year. I'm ready to continue to push the limits and I can't wait to be part of this community again (for those of you that don't know I was doing a private program from James the last year) .

I'm going to jump into group 5 training but probably a day or two behind so I can fit it into my schedule a little easier and work on extra things I feel needed.

absolutely asinine that something like this happens. but what happens when thought, logic, scientific experimentation, etc. lead to thought processes that seek to make everyone better...everyone except for those that have contracts and constant support like barry sears and reebok. money is necessary, but unfortunately is the root of all evil, and in this case the root of straying from the ideas and concepts it was originally created on. heck, it is a brand new sport. how can anyone possibly think they have it all figured out with a new sport after 4 years of competition? even if with examples of 10+ yrs of doing crossfit and still hitting pr's and doing mostly mainsite, that is not proof of anything other than something that worked a certain way (not necessarily the best way) for that individual.
i have been discussing this with everyone, including interviews with people, reebok employees, and the likes. i've always been someone that stands by what they believe in, that roots for the underdog, that seeks justice and the right way, and OPT's impact on crossfit and those he comes in contact with is no exception. why would i rather be on team OPT than sign with Reebok? because of what is right. because of james' integrity in what he does. because of the family and community he promotes and helped create. because of his desire to continually better people, not just have a program out there and sell his name.
i have learned more from 6 months of being exposed to OPT than i had in my learning about training, the body, and how it's all related prior. i've been spurred to further research and learn just from nuggets of information that coach has thrown out.
Coach, you obviously know what you think is best for you, but i would love to hang out and compete with you in california. and i'd love to see you be one of the only to continue to compete in every years' games, regardless of conflicts of interest and obvious differences. either way though, i'll be walking around in my OPT shirts and shorts discussing what i've learned from you while i'm there, and continuing to send people to this blog to start moving onward and upward...

ben kelly, jenny davis and crew, nice work this past weekend!! it was great meeting you guys and seeing you in action. Same with you Jmarsh!! always good to put faces with names.

My dream is to have more OPT affiliates than Crossfit affiliates. Glassman always said that they'll adopt whatever program is out there that is producing superior athletes than their programming. Well, I say, look at all the Big Dawgs out there that are putting up ridiculous numbers.

He also said that quality always wins out in the end, so the better coaching/programming a gym has, it will always beat price in the end. I agree, that's why we'll see more smarter programming than how the mainsite programs. There's a fundamental difference is good programming vs. mainsite programming (definition of Crossfit programming?). Therefore, more OPT-like programming will surface in the future and WIN.

    Coach,
I began following your programming in about September of 2010 and have been changed ever since. I began questioning things around me to see if there was a better way, constantly forcing myself to improve. What you offer us all here for free is more than anything would ever ask. I thank you for that.

In January of this year you asked us to post three goals in fitness, nutrition, lifestyle. I achieved my 250# clean in April and surpassed in May. Snatched bodyweight + in same period. I wanted my family to eat better and have helped my dad to lose 30+ pounds of weight and start thinking and paying attention to what he eats and how he trains. We're still working on not being so socially stupid :) I don't believe I could have achieved any of this without your help. The programming and thought provoking discussions have challenged me physically and mentally and have made me a better person. Thank you very much James! The cream always rises to the top.

I'll tread lightly on this because I don't know all the details but will stand by James whatever he chooses.

Mainsite CF ran me into the ground. I did it leading up to the 2009 SoCal regionals and popped my shoulder out 3 mins into first workout. Could have been my own prep, but I felt beatdown and ragged. Went back to mainsite after I healed and got worse. Strength numbers went down, Metcon got worse. Again I'll take responsibility for not training well and I know better. The issue is with those that don't know better and who haven't grown up around lifting, fitness, training etc. I left mainsite and found James late '09 and haven't looked back. Mainsite may work for some, but it didn't for me.

Fast forward to the CCP courses where coach talks about the good and the bad of CF programming, including mainsite and HQ athletes. He was never once disrespectful. He was never once disparaging. He simply asked us to think critically, test and retest, and then come to our conclusions. In fact, I've heard James say numerous times that he LOVES the sport. The idea that James said something or even hinted at something is so far away from anything I've ever heard or seen.
The sad reality is that this is likely about money and the fact that reebok is involved makes it worse. I'm all for sponsors, etc but legislating what you have to wear is ridiculous. It's not about clothing, it's about finding fittest people period. Putting anything in the way that prevents those who should compete means you are not seeking anyone who claims to be fittest. It means you have the fittest who will wear reebok, who didn't get screwed by a judge or a tiebreaker, who competed in a weak region, etc. Glassman stood in front of me 10 feet away and said people could wear whatever they wanted, that reebok wasn't pushing their product, that they were making things easier for the games to grow and that his job was to make sure those who deserved to compete would. Now James is out. Nate and AJ are out. Who knows who else all because of silly BS. I surely hope that rational thoughts prevail and that HQ can take a step back to look at what is happening. I appreciate what CF has done for fitness and training and it is sad to see what it is doing to really talented people. After all, isn't supposed to be about the best practices, gyms, coaches rising to the top? It's not supposed to be about sponsors!
Coach, we appreciate you and all you do and your results are well documented. Know that a growing number of people are being influenced by you every day!

    Here we go again.

Another sad day for the CrossFit community. I came into the CrossFit community with the same understanding as many - that it was a forum for open-minded, critical thinkers to express, debate and ultimately employ best practices. Any time respectful discourse is quelled, something has gone horribly wrong.

I am not sure how James or any of the efforts of OPT could have been regarded as disparaging of CrossFit. James has been one of the most positive influences in my career as a CrossFit gym owner and as a coach. My athletes have benefited greatly from the lessons James has taught me, and I know he has done the same for dozens, if not hundreds, of other CrossFit gym owners. I would have hoped those contributions would be celebrated by the CF community.

This is not a sad day for OPT. OPT will move forward and will continue to have a profoundly positive impact on all they come across. It's sad for those in the CrossFit community that will be forced to believe they are reaching "outside" of the community for the fantastic training resources and education offered by OPT.

I still have so much to learn from and share with the OPT community. I'll be here for many years.

James, on a personal note, I am sad I will not be able to cheer for you at the end of July. I am sad that Josh B. will not be able to compete next to you - forging that bond you all formed in the early years of CrossFit when there were only a few of you posting ridiculously impressive times on the CF blog.

But as you have always reminded me . . . onward. There are too many opportunities out there to be slowed or uprooted by any of this.

I was extremely saddened about the turn of events regarding the WWS. One World is a huge supporter and took second place last year =) The event was awesome and every gym that participated had a fantastic time. Mike ran a with a great idea, made it even better, and pretty much got kicked in the balls. One World will be participating in the WWS again this year.

James, you know I am a big fan of all you do. I know you love the sport of CrossFit as much as I do. To this day, your presentations at the Black Box Summit still resonate deeply within me. This is probably the worst PR that CrossFit could possibly do for itself. How do you turn on one of your biggest stars and a person who has done the leg work and has the knowledge to consistently make things better?

    This just sucks.

    James -

Working with you through the CCP is and has been one of the most influential experiences of my life. Even now as we finish up the business system module I look back and see how much it has forced me to grow and become a better person in all aspects of my life. So from bottom of my heart thank you.

Just like everyone else this situation saddens me greatly. I know how much you love the sport and love to compete. But you do what you know is right, and I commend you for that. I look forward to many more years of learning from you.

Nothing surprises me with HQ at this stage, turning on one of their best guys is just ridiculous (and not the first time its happened).

This is my fist time posting on the site (I'm not a Big Dawg yet) but I have been following OPT's workouts for some time and have just felt so much better with this programming and cant wait to attend the upcoming Level 1 modules in Arizona. I will be spreading the word over in Ireland!

Looking forward to meeting you soon coach

Kind of saw it coming with the major sponsorship and the clothing, I've participated in sporting events where I've had to tape over all the brand names that weren't sponsors on all of my equipment before it sucked, but for the amount of money that was spent it was expected. But for OPT to be thrown in the mix for the way it programs????? That is just bush league.

Probaly why I never followed mainsite, and just followed Big Dawgs from the start.

Bummed not to see you compete this July Coach.

    - for my own reasons of maintenance of integrity, not getting lost in the mix of drama vs. sport and "sticking" to my gut instinct, i will not be participating this year

So, you are not competing because of your "gut instinct" ? This is no explanation and offers nothing.

James, you are coming across like a cry baby.

Just compete. We all want to see you compete. We supported you and loved you even though you dropped out in 2009 and finished poorly in 2010. We didn't care where you placed because you represented US. We stuck by you as your fans, and now you have let us down.

And your explanation is absent of anything other than childish emotions.

    "Just Do It"

This really shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone. Whenever there is big money sponsorships involved in sports, big time control come with it.

I recall a conversation I had with Greg Glassman several years ago. There was talk that another large sports apparel company was interested in sponsoring CrossFit and throwing some serious money in the pot. Greg wasn't interested and would rather do it himself. CrossFit started grassroots and was successful. Why not expand its reach without the hassles of big corporate sponsorships.

This all changed when Reebok was allowed to sink their teeth into the CrossFit pie. I can see the allure of bringing a company of Reebok's stature on board, especially when the CrossFit Games were a speck compared to this years production. It's rather amazing to see how fast its grown in such a short period of time. Unfortunately fast growth doesn't equate to more success. In this case the fast growth equates to loss of control over the product and difficult choices that affect those that have been with CrossFit for many years.

James, I respect your position on this topic and more so as an individual. You've done nothing but represent CrossFit and are likely the reason people have taken up the "sport" to begin with. Like most things, CrossFit has evolved past what it was when you were crowned champion, and will likely be much different in another 5 years.

I'm on vacation and taking a little time to smell the roses since regionals. Hit a fun WOD today with Martin and Bjorn at Crossfit Uppsala. I'll keep this short but how many things do you know have gone south over the years because they sell out or grow too big too fast? While walking around in Paris last week, we found a little shop that had the absolutely best food I had all week and it was on a small street in the middle of nowhere. The place was absolutely amazing. When I ordered my food and espresso, one lady packed it up in a bag and the cashier asked if we were staying. I said yes and but it is ok. Her response was no it is not, please go have a seat. She brought our food and drink out to our table with fine dinnerware and it was one of my most memorable experiences ever. It is humbling to find a place that has been around for so long, knows their business and food like no other and treats their customers equally as well. Reminds me a little bit about Crossfit in the earlier years in a twisted way. Crossfit has paved the way for a better fitness in general but ultimately has evolved into a brand. It is the collective collaboration of coaches and affiliates that continues to define the athletes themselves.

All is not lost but I hope they stay true to their roots and learn from their mistakes. See you all in a few weeks!

James, I've been following you for years. I'm S&C Coach and my business is taking off...everyone keeps asking me to open a Crossfit box. I tell them, "I'm not paying someone to put their name on my hard work." My athletes are competing at a local CF event for the 1st time this weekend and I would like to thank you for giving your time and energy to the community. You inspire athletes and challenge coaches to be better, and that's what CF did for several years...I hope they find their way back to you.

Been poking around this blog for a while and came across something I found ironic so thought I would post. Over on the Reebok CrossFit One sight in the Coaches Corner Blog Austin quotes from OPT's Tips for Game Day (28 May 2011). Guess he didn't get the message. http://www.reebokcrossfitone.com/Coaches-Corner/Competition-Help.html

Looking forward to getting more into the OPT workouts and smarter programming here after another week off from regionals.

Crossfit is trying to get rid of all the old schoolers to make room for the new dawgs. If OPT showed up this year he would get clowned something fierce by the likes of Joshua Longberg and Steve Jonestin.

Well you're in your little room
and you're working on something good
    but if it's really good
you're gonna need a bigger room
and when you're in the bigger room
you might not know what to do
you might have to think of
how you got started in your little room

    -The White Stripes

That pretty much says it all. I don't think they really understand what made them successful in the first place. It certainly wasn't having all the answers.

Crossfit selling out to Reebok is old news. The minute I heard the purse with Reebok, I knew that it was officially changing then and won't be the same. I whined and complained then as fiercely as everyone seems to be doing now.

Since then I have accepted this fact and still enjoy crossfitting. I am going to the games to compete this year and still proud and very grateful I am and can. I will feel the same if an OPT Big Dawg Challenge comes up or a smaller venue or anything else otherwise... And be grateful for being able to do it. Crossfit is big and so is Reebok but, above all, I must remain consistent in my choices to not get caught up in something that is not in line with my values. I'm sure OPT and all of it's followers will continue competing in crossfit events and/or land into something else that is more congruent to James' philosophies... My 2 cents which may be worse less than that. :)

    Cheers,
    Mike

I guess that to receive the loan from banks you ought to have a great reason. However, one time I have got a short term loan, because I wanted to buy a bike.
